The 3rd Army patch was worn from 20 December 1918 to Present.
The Third United States Army was organized in November 1918 at Ligny-en-Barrois France under the command of major General J.T. Dickman for the purpose of advancinng into Germany and occupying the bridgehead at Coblenz during World War I. During World War II it came under the command of General George Patton and relieved the beleaguered 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge. The disc's two borders allude to the desingation of the unit, and the white letter "A" signifies Army. The "A" is also inside the "O" which stands for Army of Occupation. The insignia was originally approved 20 Dec 1918 for the Third Army. It was redesignated for the Third U. S. Army on 10 Nov 1960.
