5th Army Subdued Shoulder Patch

The 5th Army patch was worn from 7 April 1943 to Present.
The Fifth Army was under the command of General Mark Clark during World War II. The patch was redesigned to be more representative of the area in which the Fifth was formed. The outlined figure of a mosque representing Morocco, North Africa , where the army was formed. The flag colors of red, white and blue are self-explanatory. The letter "A" indicates "Army", and conforms, in general, to designs used by the First and Third United States Armies. The original shoulder sleeve insignia, approved January 26, 1927, was pentagon shaped with a white background and five red stars formed in a pentagon shape. The current design was originally approved on April 7, 1943.
