The Ninth Army was the first Allied army to cross the Elbe River during World War II and would have been the into Berlin had it not recieved order to stop advancing. The red and white are the colors associated with armies. The nine-sided figure indicates the numerical designation of the organization. The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 21 September 1944.
